Checklist for Moving

Preparing for a move can often be stressful and very time-consuming. Adequate preparation can save you both time and money. This is not an exhaustive list, but these are some key points to remember in preparing for your moving day.

  • All household goods need to be boxed and secured, with the exception of furniture, standing lamps, and large non-breakable floor vases (taller than 36").  Electronics that are able to be  boxed need to be secured, such as stereo boxes, gaming systems, small speakers, DVD players, etc.  These boxes need to be marked "ELECTRONICS" as well. Elite Movers will not move loose items that are capable of being boxed, including items in trash bags.

  • If you are packing your own household goods, be sure that all fragile items are adequately wrapped, padded, and in a secure box marked "FRAGILE".  Also, be sure to point these boxes out to the mover so they too are aware of these items.

  •  Place live plants in boxes, making sure each plant has a separate box and fits snuggly. You can use newspaper around the bottom of the plant pot inside the box to help you stabilize the plants and make them fit into their boxes. Punch air holes on the side of the boxes and loosely fasten the lid so the plants can breathe. This is the only exception to the unsealed box terms. Also, make sure the boxes are upright and marked with ’plant’. This is the only way that live plants will be transported by Elite Movers

  • Do not over pack a moving box.  This will only lead to internal damage as an end result.  Rule of thumb, the heavier the item is, the smaller the moving box.  Do not stick heavy items in large boxes and pack additional items around them.  Inevitably, something will break!

  • Do not interlock box-tops.  They must always be sealed with packing tape -- NOT DUCK TAPE!

  • Kitchen dishes should always be packed face-up in a barrel box, dish box, or dish barrel with a dish-wrap insert.  If you choose to use a regular box for your kitchen dishes, make sure the box is extra heavy-duty and that each breakable glassware is separately wrapped and protected within the box.

  • Pack closets and clothing in wardrobe boxes - not trash bags.  Elite Movers will not move trash bags full of clothes. Clothes can also be packed into suitcases for easy loading onto the truck.

  • Pack important documents, jewelry, coins, etc in a secured box.  Many customers opt to transport items of this nature on their own rather than boxing it for the truck.

  • Unplug and disconnect ALL electronic components such as television, stereos, gaming systems, surround sound systems, etc.  The mover will not disconnect these items.

  • Defrost all refrigerators and freezers prior to the movers arriving.  All perishable items need to either thrown away or transported to your destination by you.  Elite Movers will not place any perishable items on the moving truck.  This includes any open food containers such as pickle jars, salad dressings, etc.

The following is a list of items that Elite Movers does not allow on the moving truck.  These items need to be transported separately by the customer:

  • Open containers of Liquid (such as household cleaning products)
  • Open potted plants
  • House Paints
  • Propane tanks or cans
  • Gas or oils
  • Butane
  • Ammunition
  • Open alcohol containers
